Teaching the elderly technologies

Fieldwork Setting | Transcription | Interaction Analysis

2016/11-2017/01 

The topic of this study is to analyse the interactive behaviours in the process of teaching the elderly to use technologies, like using smartphones, tablets and computers. The setting of this fieldwork was conducted in the office of Nottingham Chinese Welfare Association (NCWA), where I volunteer with another undergraduate, conducting IT class for the elderly members there every week. The fieldwork is to study the interactional methods of the teachers (the volunteers) use for teaching and the students (the elderly) use for learning in this teaching procedure, which lasts for one hour approximately.

 

 

The analytic orientation of this ethnographic study is to unpack the machinery of the interaction of the members when they conducting their ordinary activities. In other words, there are the learning and teaching activities included in this context. The analytic orientation can be divided into three levels while applying in the fieldwork. First of all, talk and bodily conduct are the primary factors consisting of social activities, which is the most important part in my study, because the modality of this interactional work is done through talk and operation in the digital devices. Secondly, the sense and significance of social activities should be also considered since they make the context reasonable and rational. Thirdly, the practices, reasoning and steps which participants use to produce social actions are needed to analyse.

Data Collection: Video Recording, Fieldnotes.

Location: the office of Nottingham Chinese Welfare Association (NCWA).

Transcript of Activity 1

{Sau and Ik empty the table and sit down. Sau took out her Ipad from her bag}.

S: I don’t know why I can’t unlock my Ipad now. ((Shows the Ipad to Ik)).

{Sau was taught how to unlock the Ipad last week. The device installed the software update automatically, so the way to unlock changed.}
I: Now you only need to put your finger on the button and press it slightly, then you can unlock the Ipad. {presses the button and the page for entering passcode displayed} You don’t need to swipe the screen now. ((Swipes in the air for a couple of times)) Come on and have a try ((passes the Ipad back to Sau)).

S: Argh, I guess I forgot the steps you told me before. ((takes the Ipad from Ik and put it down in front of her, pressed on the button)) {The page for entering passcode showed up} So enter the passcode now?
I: Yeah, Input the numbers.
{Sau inputs the passcode, the home page displayed}

{Sau continues to prepare her laptop and writing pad. She plugs the charger of the laptop into a power board and takes out her mobile, a pair of glasses, a pen and a notebook, Ik helps to pile up her stuff.}

In this activity, Ik[teacher] introduces every quick launch button in notification panel for Sau[student].
